On May 11, 2016, Abdulhakim Qahtan successfully defended his PhD dissertation entitled " Efficient Estimation of Dynamic Density Function with Applications in Streaming Data". Abdulhakim will thus be the first PhD graduate at MINE Lab. During PhD studies at MINE Lab, Abdulhakim published 1 KDD paper, 1 AAAI paper, and 1 CIKM paper. In addition, he has 1 TKDE journal paper under revision. Abdulhakim interned at Texas A M University during July-August 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Suojin Wang. He has been awarded 2015 SIGKDD Travel Award. Abdulhakim will join QCRI in Qatar as a Postdoctoral researcher.

is a Professor and Founding director of the LAMDA Group in Nanjing University, China. Prof. Yuan Jiang from the LAMDA Group also visits our lab during the same period.
Prof. Wei Wang from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) visits our MINE Lab from Dec 7 to Dec 13. She gives a seminar on Dec 9. Prof. Wei Wang is a full professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of California, Los Angeles and the director of the Scalable Analytics Institute (ScAi).
Three young scholars from Soochow University visit our MINE Lab from Nov 25 to Dec 2, including Prof. Guanfeng Liu, Prof. An Liu and Prof. Zhixu Li, who was a former group member in our MINE Lab from 2013 to 2014. They all give seminars (Guanfeng, An, Zhixu) during their visit. Currently, they are all associate professors in Soochow University, and members of the Advanced Data Analytics (ADA) research center. Our collaboration with ADA center is further enhanced.
Our project proposal is approved for
funding by KAUST Competitive Research Grants Program. The title of the project is 'Extreme
Classification of Complex Data with Applications to Multi-media and Recognition
of Plastic Debris Floating in Seawater'. The award amount is US $1,291,198, for 3
years (starting in April 2016).
The team will include Prof. Xiangliang
Zhang (PI), Prof. Carlos Duarte (Co-I), Prof. Patrick Gallinari (External Co-I,
CNRS-University Pierre et Marie Curie), Prof. Jia Deng (External Co-I, University

Dr. Moustapha Cissé joins the MINE Lab as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Moustapha earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Pierre and Marie Curie University (University of Paris 6 - UPMC), France, in 2014.
Su Wang joins the MINE Lab as a Ph.D. student. Su received his B.S. degree in Information Science & Electronic Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 2014.
Our paper entitled 'Maximum Error-bounded Piecewise Linear Representation for Online Stream Approximation' is accepted by The VLDB Journal.
Prof. Xiaofang Zhou visits our MINE Lab for ten days and gives a talk entitled 'Big Trajectory Data: from fundamentals to performance'. Prof. Xiaofang Zhou is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, and Head of Data Engineering and Pattern Recognition Research Division at UQ. Prof. Zhou is also a specially appointed Adjunct Professor under the Chinese National Qianren Scheme hosted by Renmin University of China (2010-2013), and by Soochow University since July 2013 where he leads the Research Center.
Our paper entitled 'TideWatch: Fingerprinting the Cyclicality of Big Data Workloads' has been accepted by the 33rd Annual IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM 2014) as a regular paper (main conference). This year, the acceptance rate of regular paper is 320/1645=19.4%. This paper is another result of our joint work with IBM T.J. Watson Research Center under the support of KAUST - IBM joint project (LIQUIDx). Congrats to Shuai, a former student in our group, and to Dan and Hani, our collaborators at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Another paper from our PhD student Basma Alharbi has been accepted by ACM SAC 2014. Congrats to Basma!

Dr. Zhixu Li joined the MINE Lab as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Zhixu earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Queensland, Australia, in 2013. Zhixu visited us as a visiting Ph.D. student in November 2012.

Dr. Qing Xie joined us as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Qing earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Queensland, Australia, in 2012.
Dr. Žliobaitė visited our MINE Lab for 6 days and gave a talk in our division. Dr. Žliobaitė is currently a Lecturer at Bournemouth University, UK.
Dr. Haixun Wang visited our MINE Lab for a week and gave a seminar. Dr. Wang is currently a Senior Researcher in Microsoft Research Asia.
This special issue of Mathematics in Computer Science invites submissions of original research articles on the exploration of new mathematical theories and methodologies for data modeling and analysis, and knowledge discovery and management, on the study of existing mathematical models of big data and complex knowledge, and on the development of novel solutions and strategies to enhance the performance of existing systems and mechanisms for data and knowledge processing.
MINE members made a number of international scientific visits for collaborative research. Prof. Zhang visited Prof. Benjamin Fung at Concordia University and Prof. Gang Hua at Stevens Institute of Technology in August. Abdulhakim Qathan interned in the research group of Prof. Suojin Wang at TAMU University during June - August. Shuai Zheng attended KDD conference and the Summer school in August. Dr. Hai Huang visited Dr. Haixun Wang at Microsoft Research Asia in August. Dr. Hengjie Song visited Baidu Inc. during September - October, and Dr. Faisal Kamiran visited Université Libre de Bruxelles in December.
Our Innovation Award Proposal 'Some Highly Collaborative Research Problems in Statistical Machine Learning and Uncertainty Quantification' has been accepted and approved by Texas AM University. This one-year Innovation Award starts in June 2012 and sponsors our collaborative research with Prof. Suojin Wang at TAMU.
Prof. Suojin Wang visits our MINE Lab (May 8 - June 14, 2012). Prof. Wang is a Professor of Statistics at Texas A M University. His visit will reinforce our joint research in statistics and machine learning.
Prof. Cécile Germain-Renaud visited our MINE Lab for one week and gave a talk. Cécile is a full Professor in Université Paris-Sud 11, France. She is an expert in Autonomic Computing, Grid and Cloud Computing. Her visit enforces our research collaboration in Cloud Computing.
Dr. Faisal Kamiran joined us as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Faisal earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from
Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, in 2011. His arrival enforces our research in data mining.
Our paper entitled 'Automatic Label Generation by Combining Mouse Trajectory and Click-Through Data' has been accepted for the AI and the Web track at the Twenty-Sixth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2012). AAAI is a premier conference in Artificial Intelligence. This year, the acceptance rate of AAAI is 294/1129=26%.
Dr. Hengjie Song joined us as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Hengjie was a senior researcher in Baidu after he completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His arrival enforces our research in semantic search engine, web mining and social networks.
Dr. Hai Huang joined us as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Hai earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, in 2011. His arrival enforces our research in databases, data mining and cloud computing.
The website of our MINE Lab is launched. The new
website will be a dynamic platform to present our latest news, activities and research.
Shuai has won an Academic Excellence Award (AEA)
worth $6000 US dollars. The award was based on his excellent performance on
research. Only the top 15% who satisfy the minimum criteria have the
opportunity to win the award.
Prof. Zhang recently visited Prof. Jianhua Huang at
the Department of Statistics, Texas A M University (1 week research visit) to foster collaborative research in machine learning and statistics.
Prof. Zhang visited the 'Cloud Platforms and
Transformation' group at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center
The purpose of the visit was to perform joint research with the group
in high performance computing and cloud management.
